I know, dumb question, but do they go vertical or horizontal? Im pretty sure verticla, but im kinda second guessing myself. I am about to incubate my first batch and a little nervous.

no, ive never done this before. I have an incubator that has wire mesh in the bottom, and not really enough room to stuck an egg carton in it.

The egg carton, if trimmed, shouldn't add so much as to make a difference, if so, sounds cramped in there...I'm also a newb so I'm not aware of bators that may be like that...

You cut the top of the carton off. I found my hatches are more successful and don't have to worry about rolling around when they are hatching.

What kind of incubator are you using?

Are they shipped eggs?

Answering these questions would help us answer your question.

The eggs are from a local farm which one of my friends manages. there are 9 total. I picked them up and a little giant 9200 still air incubator from her yesterday, and now currently trying to stablize the temp around 99.5-100 degrees. they are chicken eggs, all from various types of chickens (some are silkies, some are polish, they are all mixed in togeather, its hard to tell who laid what)
I guess there is enough room if i cut the top off the carton...hmmm....
