we have been working on this for a while and nothing, not even shiny things in the tree for the birds, will keep the wildlife out of our babies feeders.does any one know how to do this on a school day schedule?and without spending too much?and I don't want to kill them because it seems like they depend on us in the winter, the birds I mean, and yes we habve bird feeders.

Hello! I am like you and I can’t watch my chooks during the day. What I did was buy an automatic feeder. It is great! You can buy on backyard chickens as well. How it works is the chickens step on it and the lid opens meaning nothing can get to the food. We also put a rock on top of it before we lock them up at night so that the food is safe till morning and nothing is able to push the lid off.

What @Chickens :) is referencing is a Treadle Feeder.

That is one option, the other is to not "free feed" them and only put out what they should be eating while you are gone. Or feed half in the morning and half when you get home.

For both methods, it is also wise to not leave any out overnight. Some people buy a large metal trash can and just put the entire feeder in there every night. Then put it back out in the morning.

yeah thats what we do,but instead of going through a 40 pound of bag of feed in a month,we go through it in 15 days
Bucket feeders and treddle feeders will work for what you want to do. Are the hens wasting it though? You could have squirrels in the day time too
