How do you prevent water from freezing

That's a great idea, thank you!!

Walmart is certainly the cheapest place to get it, I've seen them for over 50 dollars. They work great- I used to slam mine against the trunk of a tree to break the ice, then take it inside and put it in front of the heater, leaving water all over the house. Dog dish is the best way to go.

Totally unfrozen in an unheated/uninsulated coop all winter except for several really stormy (windy cold) days where the upper bottle froze but still liquid in the bottom. Had to replace with unfrozen 5 gallon jug only twice through winter. I put in a fresh 5 gallon (from the house) with 1/2 c ACV about once a week throughout the winter. Worked great!!

I sprung for a heated dog dish this year, which is surprisingly deep and large enough for my flock of 28 standard breeds. Love it and should have done it years ago! I already had heated buckets for the dogs and sheep, why not the chickens? Saves me a lot of work and worry.

henny penny has an effective setup. I have one of those big green dog bowls but if it gets below 20 the thing freezes anyway. Is mine defective or do they all do that?

I use a pail/bird bath de-icer. I use the watering nipples so I needed something that could be put in the water. It's plugged into a gfci and has been working great. Before that I just gave them fresh warm water in the morning(inside coop) about 5am and when I got home at 4pm it was still drinkable with just a bit of ice. I only have 3 hens and our weather had been hanging around 15 F for 4 days. I just didn't want all the extra water in the coop that had been splashed around from them drinking. My coop is 3ftX4ft. and I want to keep it as dry as possible.
