How do you pronounce "diatomacious" earth?

I've used food grade DE with adult chickens without problems, but this article claims it may not be so good for birds :

You have to be carful too because I did find it at Lowes here in town. But, it had additives in it. The bag said Diatomaious Earth Plus. It's used for bug control, but unsafe for pets and humans. And that means chickens too.

I read a thread in BYC that said it's also call Fossill Shell Flour.

Is the kind from a garden store OK? I have some for sprinlking in the garden to control slugs and soft-body insects. I wonder if that's OK to use.....

It has loads of uses in organic farming and animal raising. Going to Lowe's or Home Depot though is a false start. What you need is a feed store. You'll be able to get 40-50 lb bags of it for tremendous savings over buying it 1-2lb at a time at a flower nursery.

nmantime.....thanks for the info on the diatomacious earth from Grass Valley!!!!! I have never seen it so cheap! This first time I bought food grade DE was at a nursery at approximately $4 per lb. This place sells the stuff including shipping at about $1 per lb. Hip Hip Hooray!!

My cute little ladies are 120 days old now (over 3 months). I use DE in my coop floor with shavings, in their treats (lightly dusted), in all their dust bath areas. and in their run to cut down flies.

DE rules!!

Thanks for the tip on a great price, I just placed my first order; and while I only live about 45 minutes away from Grass Valley, I went ahead and ordered it delivered cuz it's such a great price!

One is in New Mexico and the other is in Arkansas Shipping is out of this world expensive If you order it from California you will poay more for shipping than the product.
