How Do You Say The Word, Our

Dialects, regional slang and phrases fascinates me. I once read a book called The Story of English by Robert McCrum, Robert MacNeil and William Cran. I googled the book to find the authors and found out it was turned into a PBS miniseries. Here is a synopsis:

I was born in KCMO, Dad from Dallas, Mom from Chicago, moved to Central* New Jersey when I was 4. My accent is a mixture of all of these. Now in Southwest Mo. Some Arkansas southern is starting to creep into my speech.

*Central Jersey has a different accent than both North and South Jersey. And nobody from "Jersey" says "Joisey".

Once, friend and I had an argument over "orange". He was from eastern PA, but lived in NJ when I knew him. He said "Ahrenge" I said "Orange". Told him if it was supposed to be his way it would be spelled "arange".

Our is closer to "hour" than "are". Not so much "ow-er" as "aw-r".

I put my groceries in a bag, not a sack.
My husband had a car accident, not a wreck.
I drink soda - not pop or coke.

Ever hear "Come go with me." as if it was all one sentence?

LOL.. Ive tried Sarah, just cant do it. I think its the heaviness. Most northerners (Disclaimer...MOST...lol) dont eat big breakfasts. Probably cause we/they dont sit still long enough.

Ive always been a 'bagel on the run' kind of gal. Biscuits and gravy just dont eat well on the Interstate.

If you think McD's was annoyed over the coffee law suit, wait til you hear about the hot gravy one...

Whats going on with the coffee law suit?? I drink their iced mocas

Yeah- big breakfasts are only a weekend thing for us. The rest of the time it's a cup of oatmeal or quick bowl of cereal, and a pot of coffee or tea.

Anybody ever make "squaw corn"? We have it for dinner sometimes - with turkey bacon though. I have no idea where the recipe originated.

Sorry, that was old news. Back a few years ago, someone sued McD's because they placed a hot cup of coffee between their legs while driving and hit a bump...They sued because the coffee was too hot. I was just trying to be funny. I guess I should go get me another cup of coffee before I try again...
