how do you ship adult birds?

Something important has been overlooked:

You must have NPIP certification or a health certificate (depending on where you are sending them to) to ship any live bird. To do so without this is illegal and can affect the health of everyone's flocks.

I just came back from the local post office and was told that express shipping for an adult roo from Boston area to Pittsburgh area would take two days. Is that a safe amount of time for him to go without food and water? I thought the whole purpose of sending him express was to get him there overnight...

It's true, express shipping does not always mean overnight in all cases. It depends on the specific origin and destination. Adults and juveniles always have to go express. It can be costly depending on the distance.

You can include things like apple slices, corn or even growgel to keep him hydrated. You will need an USPS approved shipping box to send him in.

So you know, while the box begins at and is delivered by the postal service, the shipping between sorting facilities is handled by other carriers such as FedEx. Their timetable is what really determines the shipping time. While the box is in their hands the USPS will not be able to locate it if it happens to be bumped for things like dry ice. Once I sent 2 boxes of birds to WA state and one to Philadelphia out all at the same time. They all arrived at the same time 2 days later. The Philly shipment got bumped and arrived a day late.
