How do you store straw?

We keep ours in our pole shed on one of those slatted crate things so the air can get around it to keep it dry. Works fine.

I was interested in finding this answer because we have a rat problem around our coop.
But we are using HAY - not straw.
So, while we battle that, organically of course, we do NOT want to give the rats any free and cozy bedding to use. (We found hay stuffed into all kind of holes and in the walls where they were!)

I thought about getting a container of some sort to keep the loose hay in, but some of y'all say that it will not get enough air and might mold. Would hay get moldy also or is it just straw that would not do well in a container?
