How do you store your eggs?

If you dont mind me asking. How much do you sell your eggs for? And how many do you give when you gift them?

I'm near a very liberal part of Oregon, with lots of health food stores -- there are certified organic Black Copper Marans eggs selling for $9.50/dozen there. No lie. In the grocery store, Organic free range eggs are at least $5/dozen. Same at the Farmer's Market.

I'm about an hour from town, surrounded by chicken keepers -- the average price out here is $3/dozen. We literally have fresh eggs being sold: at my real estate lady's office, at the liquor store, at the pet store. At the bakery. I've got competition!

If I wanted to drive to the hipster town and sell at the big farmer's market, or get customers at an office building, I would up my price to $5, but I keep it at $3, like most everyone else.

I'll "gift" a dozen eggs sometimes, if no one has called me wanting more, and I'm overflowing. I have 6 layers now, and am getting almost 3 dozen a week! In a month, I will have 5 dozen a week -- I'll have to up my game (I can bring my extras to the local liquor store, and they will sell for me, and give me all the profits -- they make nothing. Isn't that cool?).

When I've *gifted* eggs in order to get new customers, it has never worked. Those people have never called me to get more eggs. I give them, just to give them now.

When I see my two kids, in college, in town, with roommates/etc, they always get gifted some. My son's roommate grew up on a farm in Alabama, and he's pretty thrilled to have fresh eggs and produce. My son (city boy) doesn't get the allure of super fresh, but humors me.

My sister made the mistake of telling me, "Oh, I don't even *like* eggs...." So, now she doesn't get any! Then I hear from my mom how sister is *hurt* because I don't ever give her any eggs. OMG! Family dynamics!

Sorry for the epic post! But, you asked....

I don't wash them, and store in an old egg carton from the store. I only have 3 hens, and they don't lay every day, so we go through them fast. No need to date them, I don't sell or even give them away very often, we go through them so fast.
That sounds like me in the winter! I think I was getting 1 egg a day, out of 6 hens. I didn't have to break down and BUY store bought eggs, but it came really close! (here's hoping the leghorns live up to their winter laying reputation next year)

I know my leghorns delivered their 1st winter! They are egg laying machines!
Woo Hoo!
:wee

Good! They are SUCH troubled teens right now -- flapping into the neighbor's yard, picking on their flock mates, chasing the rabbits.

Once they get over a year old they will mellow a little bit. A little bit.
I remember when they were teens. Could barely keep them in the pen, they are escape artists. And if you don't handle your leghorns everyday from the time they are little, you'll be lucky to ever get your hands on them. I thought about sending them to Freezer Camp but they're just to dang skrawny to eat, besides they put out one heck of an egg!
Their eggs, they just keep on coming and coming! And get larger every month till they are jumbos! Most never go broody, but I got lucky and had one go broody. Most protective/good Momma I've ever seen, even more protective than Game hens. I'm gonna start saving back some of her eggs to hatch, soon as I breed her to a couple of old school Shanghai Silkies I got from from my 90 year old neighbor. He said he's had the same flock since he got some from his grandpa during the Great Depression. These Shanghais are huge and make a large egg, not like the little toy Banty Silkies of today. Maybe I can keep the jumbo eggs and breed a little more broodiness into my lehorns. I'll call them Silkhorns!

Silkhorns! That's adorable!

My leghorns are getting nicer to me now that they have begun laying. I tried to handle them as chicks, and they hollered like they were being murdered. They're all flirty now they are more mature, doing the sexy girl squat. They are beating the crap out of my sweet little Welsummer and Cuckoo Marans though. The Marans outweighs them by at least 2lbs (she's a bruiser) but she cowers and honks in fear on the roost at night.

Those white eggs make my colored eggs look gorgeous in the carton, too. Things really *pop* now. It all comes back to marketing and showmanship.... :)

Dated in pencil, checked after day three and put on counter in a bowl.
