How do you store your poultry feed?

Thanks Perchie Girl. It is a habit for me to put things up off any kind of surface. I guess I wasnt clear in my statement.

We have been using garbage cans, however, a friend has given us a non-working chest freezer that I am hoping to go get this weekend and we will be using that to store all our animal feed.

My parents always used non-working freezers and they last quite a long time, are rodent proof and water-proof as long as the gaskets are still good.

Our feed mill is about an hour away, so we go down every other week to get feed. We have 41 chickens and 6 turkeys (5 of which are BBW headed for freezer camp in a couple weeks) and 15 meat chicks, 2 goats, 1 barn cat (hoping to make that 2 soon) and 1 horse, so we go through quite a bit of feed and need a larger storage.

Oooh Chest freezers work great as long as they are the older kinds with metal liners instead of plastic. Some have drains so you have to either cap them or stuff the hole with steel wool. Steel wool will keep mice out. We had one at the first boarding stable I boarded at in 1967. Feed stayed an even temperature too. And it had a latch on it that could be padlocked.

I forgot I just got one. It still has to have the motor removed, and wheels puton so it can be wheeled to the new barn. At least till I can get a feed room built. (probably will take another five years to get that built.... Sigh)

Oh good.... some times you cant think of it all.   There are alot of people here that are very new to dealing with feed in any quantity and I just wanted to point that out for their benefit.

I keep mine on concrete. Food in bags doesn't stay here more than 2 weeks, so I don't usually see an issue. However, next time I get feed, I'm storing it on pallets! Thanks for this tip!

Even an ounce of water will flow by capillary action between the microscopic space between the bags and the concrete.    Capillary Action can also draw water Up hill.... Very interesting process... same that draws fuel up a wick for a lamp.  And Yep my food doesn't last that long either.... LOL.
Very cool Perchie girl!

Thanks again :D Wish the feed lasted longer!

I have been using big plastic tubs. They are the kind meant to store dog food. I keep them in a Rubbermaid storage 'closet' in back. It's really short and wide so it fits their feed, wood shavings, treats, everything. :)
