How do you tell the age of a chicken

It is hard to be exact once they are full size beyond 5-6 months. I don't think or at least I have never heard of any marking of a year in chickens. There is really not much difference in a 1 year chicken compared to a two year chicken.

I think of chickens more like this..... young......full grown......old. Once they get old, they look old, a little less spry, a little more bent, and their feet look old......

Kind of vague, but it works for me. If you buy chickens and they are not young..... you can about bet, that they are about to become old relatively quickly..... and that is why they are being sold or given away. People who are established chicken people keep the good laying 1-2 year old chickens in their flocks. they have put the money into them, are are getting a return at this point.
