Hatcheries sell "started pullets" that are usually already 16-24 weeks old, and should begin laying eggs within a few weeks of receipt of the birds (rather than a 4-5month wait). Yes, they are a bit more expensive to buy and shipping is likely more, but they will be females and you don't have to buy chicks items.
