How early do you clip chick wings?

Did someone say they don't fly well? Because let me tell they DO and can get really high. Mine roost on the barn rafters and have done the same near the tops of my old oaks. Another thing they will fly over any fence and destroy your entire Garden. So clipping their wings keeps them where you want them. youtube has some good videos on this.

My Leghorns are jumping out of the 2ft high fence they are in and they do have their wing feathers in. I would like them to be free range without getting to far. Does clippi g their wings hurt them? Im so scared of hurting them.

I put an old fly screen over my brooder and only had it up if I was sitting near by - they would fly up and sit on the rim of the brooder. The fly screen worked great to keep them in but also for ventilation.
Clipping their wings does not hurt them but I would look up a youtube "how to" before attempting it. I have parrots and other birds so I have done it for years.

it does not bother them...youtube has some easy and helpful vids and I would recommend them if you've never done it.

So I clipped my chicks wings this afternoon. They are almost 10 weeks old and I did it by myself, which actually wasn't too difficult since they are super friendly, anyway they have been in their outdoor run all afternoon and so far so good, no wayward chicks in the veggie garden or scratching in my flower beds !! And they have not ventured out of the back yard and down the street as they did last week, a Neighbour had to take them in til the pet sitter, we were away overseas, came home and got them!!!! Mine are flyers or I should say were!!! They seem happy enough, definitely more so now they are not cooped up in the enclosed run

Just an FYI for those of you who don't know where or how to cut your chickens wings, I did a search on "how to clip chickens wings" and I was able to find several live demonstrations on Youtube. Hope this helps.

I have 13 Buff Orphingtons and 12 New Hampshire Reds that are about 3 weeks old. Is it necessary to clip their wings? How soon can I put them in the coop which is surrounded by a 5 ft fence and they have about 700 sq ft to move around with the fenced area?

Hi. I would like to clip my 7 week olds wings, because the enclosed run is getting too crowded and beat up, and the couple times that one of my girls has escaped, she has flew and landed on the fence. Thanks for any advice!

Folks, PLEASE consider that when you clip wings, it makes it extremely difficult for them to get away from a potential predator.  Consider providing an area with a fence high enough so they can fly & not escape....it's good exercise, and gives them something to do.  They ARE birds, after all....JMO.

It is JYO, but I am going to have to agree with you. Raising Chickens weather for layers, fryers, or family pet doesn't need to be cruel. I am done investigating this subject, I am not doing it. I will trust add some netting or wire over top of run. Thanks
