Maurice begins at about 5:30, and stops when he settles in for the night (lucky for me...I've got mini donkeys, too, and I think the neighbors would be annoyed about braying and roosters crowing together!)
Usually around 3:30 AM.....a few hours before sun-up. How do they know??? The other night I got up at 1AM to go to the bathroom-one of them was crowing then-crazy birds!
They crow anytime.
At least they are locked in the insulated coop until I turn them out in the morning,so when I hear them at 1am or 3am it is only faintly.
Don't worry it will happen in time first you will think it's another creature making the noise then you will realize that it is your young roo. When they do begin it is quite commical to listen to. Well at least my husband laughed at ours.
mine get up whenever i let them all out of the coop. Before I started locking the birds away in the coop at night they had been getting up as early as 430 crowing up a storm.
my little guy Clyde will start about 4:15am every morning thats when he hears the front door open as my DH heads of to do the paper route, than once I let them out he crows off on all day until bedtime
