How easy is it to re-home a Roo?

If I have what is a good looking rooster that could be nice addition to someones flock I either advertise on Craigs list at 20.00 purebred and take a GREAT picture or my local feed store puts them in cages outside the store for 10.00. The shop keeps the money but I am one rooster down

They always tell me my roosters sell fast because I bring in good looking birds. If someone is willing to pay between 10.00 and 20.00 for a Rooster they don't usually become dinner. Now, the barred sexlink roosters my broody raised up they went in a flash on CL as a lot of 5 for 25$ People were calling like crazy... market price and they had to do all the hard work. A nice family bought them for their freezer. So you have to do some looking but we have more than one feed store in the area that will take hens and roosters and not always for slaughter.

I would give him/her a little more time. Here is what my two Welsummer "pullets" look like at 10 weeks (I just got a new replacement chick for the obviously male "pullet"). The roo is, of course, the first photo. But this will give you an idea of the difference in feathering and coloration at just 10 weeks.

IF your roo needs a home, I've been looking for a wellie roo!

OP, I support providing dinner to someone deserving; I also support Wellies NOT being their dinner. Wellies are NOT the easiest bird to find and they are on the rare list presently.

WSdareme?? Whuddya say? Can I provide your roo a great home? Several acrers, several hens . . .

LOL! I'll keep you in mind if I decide to rehome him! I really had no intentions of keeping another roo, but the older he gets the prettier he gets and he sure has a non-aggressive personality (so far). He is a hatchery bird, not from a breeder, and I have no idea if he's a good example of the breed standard. But he is so pretty! I'm actually thinking about keeping the pair (I had bought two thinking I'd get one pullet) and hatching a few eggs. If I do that (have to clean out another stall in the barn in order to keep them separate from the other roo and his harem), how about if I give you some hatching eggs? Or, if you don't have an incubator, I could hatch some chicks for you? I cannot wait to see what color eggs the pullet lays!!!!!

I'm in Yelm -- where are you located?

Sorry -- didn't mean to hijack the thread! But see how easy it is to find fellow BYCers that might be interested in your roo??

Lemme take him off yer hands for ya.

Whuddya want, wellie eggs to hatch? A different chick or two or three? Another pretty roo?

I have Wellie girls that have FINALLY started laying. They need a good roo. I have plenty of incubators. I have lots of blue chicks at the moment. I've been playing with rare breeds. (I even have a few blue Marans chicks. Shhh)

I want the roo!

Welsummers are rare? That's actually a bit of a relief - if Ethel/Ethan is a roo, it sounds like my dream of a farm with a bevy of hens just might come true. We'll see how things turn out in the next few weeks.

Bertha's feathers definitely look like the second photo. Eth's ? Not like the 2nd, not like the 1st. I'll have to wait & see.

I think it is wonderful that you feel this way, I have chinese crested dogs as well as chickens, and i have a full contract that goes with all of my puppies that dont make the show cut and need to be homed. I am picky picky picky. I am new to chickens, I am finding I am almost as close to my chickies, as I am my dogs. I look forward to going out to care for them twice a day and interacting with them. They are not the stupid animal i was raised to believe they were. Now my white leg horns i am finding i do not like as well, because they perk the heck out of each other. I may have to buy stock in blue cote haha. I would also be concerned if i was going to home one of my chickens how they were treated, be it if they were going to be someones dinner, or a pet. anyway good girl for worrying and follow your heart. There are lots of cruel people in this world that are not so humane when it comes to Gods creatures.

PS In 1935 my Mom was born and raised in Half Moon bay. As a child she played amongst the flowers in the flower fields there.
