I know that there are purists on here that do not consider a group of less than 10 birds a flock. But, my clutch of chickens still behave like chickens. When allowed they wander through the corn fields and my yard which is full of nutritious grubs, other insects, fresh grass, and weeds. They eat, scratch, and run around together. They also make a mess in their coop which I clean daily (while cleaning I am thankful not to have a true flock). They pretty much behave like any flock would do.
My pack of chickens are just a hobby for me, I am not dependent on them to feed my family. They do provide me with eggs daily which I am grateful for (and gladly eat their delicious gifts). If I could, I would have more than 10, but my better half, the one who is sometimes more logical than I am, thinks that 5 chickens and 4 ducks is plenty for our current family of 3 (soon to be only the 2 of us and some dogs).
