Does the metal for the post become eroded then with time?

We would be much happier (even if not finding the pearl) knowing she could be using it in her gizzard without a long pokey metal thing attached to it. They are already sleeping for the night. She seemed fine when I was closing up the run.

Sorry, but the ear ring is liable to remain in her gizzard with the grit to help grind the food. The only guaranteed way to get the ear ring back is to kill the hen and check the entire digestive tract. Sorry.

Well, she seemed bright and chipper this morning when I let them out of their pen.

I do hope that it will not cause her harm and hopefully (at least the metal) erode over time...

These chickens really are something. On another aspect (which is how the earring was taken off my lobe in the first place), Pavlov's conditioning is going very well. The chicks are really recognizing that the palm near the ground means I want them to perch on it. Right now I'm alternative between food and love. They prefer the food. Haha.

Your pearl is most likely gonzo. I butcher my chickens and always look in the gizzard for the interesting polished stones. I once found a marble ground down with a frosted coating to 1/3 the size, I've no idea how long it took. My property has the debris of Glacial rock, so there are all kinds of stones from granite to quartz etc. I have found no soft stones like limestone, only the hard kind. My chickens gizzards can polish quartz, how about yours?

PitterPatterPalace it is not a total loss. Just get one of your ears peaced again and you can put your now extra pearl in that hole. Many can contest to losing and earing if you have and extra hole you have a purpose for them. See there is a bright side.

Just thought of something else. You could write a book instead of "The Goose That Laid The Golden Egg" The Dominique that -------------" Okay you all come up with a good finish to the book tiltle.

We were talking about having the other (non-eaten) pearl be placed as a necklace but a ring sounds good too. Another thought would be to make the Dominique a fashionable piece of jewelry like a pearl jacket so we can keep the set as a pair.
