How hatching works under a broody? Newbie help please!

Isn't it amazing!! Favorolles are auto-sexing, yes? At least I thought so, i know nothing about them except I think they are beautiful! The black chick of mine is actually a dark blue bantam cochin, her chick is mottled splash. I need to see if she has hatched any more.

Getting a broody to trust you, especially one that wasn't friendly before is excellent, in my opinion. The black and white hen (exchequer serama) in my pictures never let me touch her before. But i help her get the chicks to a raised nest box at night and she trusts me, which makes the chicks a little more trusting also.

Bless her - she used to panic when I handled her (we only got her in March or maybe late Feb) but is much happier with me now and has been totally fine with everything while brooding. She gave me one very very gentle tap when I touched one of the chicks but that is it.

Late this afternoon we went down again as I couldn't help myself wanted to make sure there wasn't any shells left and to check everything is OK. I quickly (gently and very carefully) lifted her up and this is what we saw

The Faverolles and I'm guessing 2 Australorps (?) and 1 Orpington (although slightly confused as I thought they were Splash and there seems to be a lot of dark or is the one with more yellow closest to mum likely to turn splash??). One zipping (dh saw it moving so hopefully all good - I put mum straight back so she was only off a few seconds really) and I couldn't see any signs of anything happening in the last egg in the quick time she was off. I'm pleased with 4 - will be super pleased if the 5th comes out as well and shocked / amazed if the 6th turns into a chick! I did smell something but I couldn't tell if it was just the bit of yuck that Doris got on her yesterday.

I'm questioning my decision now - maybe I should have taken the potentially bad egg out and candled it. What do you think??

This late in the game, if the one egg was bad, momma would have likely moved it to the side. They can tell bad ones too. I think it will all be fine. Candling or even just sniffing the egg would be ok, if it makes you feel better though.

They sure know how to make us feel silly for all the worrying we do too, huh? Looks like momma has everything under control.

On the splash question - most breeders have blue/black/splash, so unless they only have splash, its more likely that any of the 3 colors is possible. But if they have a splash-only group, then they should be splash. The little yellow one does appear to be splash, from what I can tell. Blues and splashes also vary in shade and amount of blue/white, so without knowing the parents, its hard to guess.

One gorgeous fluffy yellow chick spotted (and saved - it had jumped down a gap that I hadn't even noticed between her nest box thing and the wall!). Will go down later to get pics and hopefully spot more chicks!

Hubby thrilled as we have a 'real' yellow fluffball! I cleared out 3 eggshells, I saw one other pipping and there is definitely a black and yellow chick (Australorp I'm guessing) as well as the yellow though I'm thinking there are 2 yellows. One has leg feathers so that means my last Faverolles egg must have hatched (now just please be a girl!) - one got broken in the first few days, one was the rotten one I removed yesterday. So if I'm right and I've spotted 2 yellows that means I have so far 1 Splash orpington, 1 Faverolles and 1 Australorp. Fingers crossed we get more as the final count!

So nice having a broody who doesn't attack me! Maybe we'll be able to bond a bit better with these chicks (Hermione the warrior silkie hasn't let me near hers - in a month I've never been able to pick them up ). Will update as more arrive!

Can't work out if that is the same chick and they just moved or it is 2 different ones!

Absolutely! I'm having to stop myself from doing anything else tonight - I'll just leave the new little family to themselves.

I'm pretty certain she only has spalsh in there (I saw her breeding pens).

The little yellow one does appear to be splash, from what I can tell.

The yellow one is the Salmon Faverolles I think based on elimination - there are 2 eggs left and they are both brownish from the photo (was so quick to take everything in that is why I asked DH to take a pic) and the Faverolles egg was white (I'm question now and wondering if I should dig in the garbage bin to find the broken ones ).
