How high can a chicken "fly/jump"?

We have a red sex link that loves to "tight rope" walk our 5' chain link fence. She flies up and then wanders around.

I have a whole brood of 7 teenagers who sleep at the top of a 12 foot ladder and they don't climb up the ladder they fly

I have a Amerucana that can fly and target my shoulder or head. Thank goodness I had a hat on.

The good news is it's very easy to clip wings, I have a friend who has lots of chickens and she gave me the five minute training. Do both wings, and do all of the feathers, not just the primary ones esp. for the escape artists. It is a two person job, my husband holds while I clip. Don't get close to the "quick" which is easy to see on most birds (I did have to be careful with my Black Stars -- and it was essential I do a good job with them since they are young and extremely adventurous. I sure hope they settle down when they start to lay!).

Clip,Clip,Clip. Do it once every 4-6 weeks. The first time they will make fools of themselves. But it is very entertaining.
