Hi we've got fencing up but want to be sure it big enough as we live in the country there are loads of foxes and there taking other peoples hens around us all the time. So far no casualty's but it may only be a matter of time. I will do anything to stop them getting my cockerel, i'd be gutted if i lost him, hes such a good character. Thanks

id worry about a fox going under more than over, or through a hole. if they can fit there head through theyre in. i lost 20+ birds in a single night to a fox!! Completely gone! the next night 10 or so more. then a fox ended up hit on the road infront of my house and didnt loose one more bird. I couldnt believe it cause you could barely fit your fist through the only hole, but it had to be him.

We've made sure they cant get under, we've got the mesh sunken into the ground and scaffolding posts round the bottom with half and security gates on the other half, we had to do this anyhow because we have pigs in there that also like to dig themselfs out. It's so hard keeping the foxes away it really makes me paranoid even after we've spent hundreds trying to make the hens safe

I've seen a Red Fox jump over a 4 foot fence, they usually dig under if they can, thats why my chicken run now has plastic coated fencing buried about 6 inches. (See my BYC page)

Yes i'm from the UK so red foxes are my only problem. Most of the foxes hunt mainly at night but my hens are locked away then, so during the day is our problem.

When it comes to animals and food its not very safe to make sweeping statements like that. Any animal will do just about anything to get to food if it is hungry enough. Fences, doors, wire....none of that means anything to a starving animal, just an obstacle between it and the food.
