I was planning on adding on the run but I was wondering if I have to put wire on top too

I have 6 rainbow layer and 6 was just sold as pullets

Depends on the type of chicken. I had hundreds of exotic breed chickens growing up and many of the lighter/smaller chickens could fly reasonably well in height and distance. They were often roosting 30 feet up in a very large maple.

I have a wire top for predators (raccoon mostly).

I was planning on making it 4 or 5 feet but I might just put wire over for protection

Another thing to consider - will 4 or 5 feet high be comfortable for you when you have to do something out there? Nothing more miserable than being hunched over trying to rake, catch a reluctant chicken, or whatever.....

i have 12 chickens, and they are small and large. and i dont have a roof over their run, and they have never gotten out, because i have more larger birds then light and my chickens like to stay together. so they dont fly out.
