How I Got Unfriended

Every time I see a syrphid fly or a bee fly (Bombylidae) labeled as a bee. I want to correct them.

Then I think, nope. They could have looked it up. They SHOULD have looked it up.

I saw my first bombylidae a few weeks ago. The little fellow was in my bathroom (no idea how he managed that), looking exhausted! I picked him up and got a little jar and did a quick search to see if I should release or kill (only pests, I am a gardener bleeding hearts!). Once I found what he was, he got a quick release in the flowers and flew away looking quite grateful.....for an insect!

Lest you think this bothered me, it doesn't. What bothers me more is the fact that we're getting to the point where, when someone errs they can't take being "confused with facts", rather than research things for themselves, they shoot the messenger. What bothers me about the Internet is there is some much "stuff" out there that is plainly wrong, distorted or just created to make a point that we no longer seem to be able to distinguish the truth. However, the Internet is also a good tool for digging up the truth but most people won't use it. If someone does and the results aren't what is expected then it is discounted. I see now that Snopes is being discounted whenever what is written there isn't in agreement with some people's idea of the truth. So if I am unfriended because I point out the error in someone's thinking I am sad, especially when I thought the person unfriending me was reasonably intelligent.
I could tell you practically in tears.

No, I just think some folks misinterpret things because it's called "friending". Not to mention sharing things with total strangers. DW gets request to friend people she never even talks to. I don't have a FB account. You folks here are the lucky ones.

digging up the truth - It's also a good place for digging up dirt.

Folks also misinterpret the tone of the conversation.

What can anyone tell me about "Linkedin"? I may have joined looking for information long ago. I get requests to "Connect" with folks I don't even know and at least one who I'm not interested in carrying on our former friendship.

I don't use Linkedin so what's the point of this site.

I got a request to connect with "Silkie Lady". There is a picture of a Silky chicken, but anyone from here should know how I feel about silkies.

Probably what bothered me most about this kind of petition is the lack of knowledge people have of the "real world" of agriculture. This is the same kind of thing that happens when people move into a farming area and then complain about the animals making noise, late night planting/harvesting and the smell. Or that male chicks and calves have to be euthanized or used as veal. They see something, immediately find it wrong and attempt to stop it without know the story behind it. We're becoming a people that are so removed from our farming roots that we no longer understand the how and why things have to be done. Farming is a messy business but most that practice it love their animals and aren't cruel, but they do have to be practical.

I am learning all this now. I had no idea and while I was not ignorant on purpose, I was removed form the process. I will be culling my first rooster soon and it is weighing on me that I had no idea what this was going to be like. Don't get me wrong, I am not giving it up. I am loving getting back to nature and learning how to raise my own.

Those petitions are suspect, I used to be a huge supporter after doing my own due didligence and research, a lot of them have changed policies and people's opinions, but some are just plain garbage. Yes, it is true they are just the tool, but that tool can carve a deep gash if used wrong.
