how in the heck are we supposed to live these days

I'll take Perpetual Motion Machines, Alex, for $100,000 dollars.

This hasn't stopped spinning for approximately 4.5 billion years.

What is The Earth?

(Well, you DID say ANYONE's) :p

Close but no cigar, Cassandra. Like Troy Reed's scam, the earth is a giant flywheel slowly winding down. It was originally spinning at about twice it's current rate. Thanks for playing. Now let's move on to our next contestant, Dave.

Why do you want everyone to continue the same path so badly?

Where’s your source? You are on this guy Troy Reed and I am on the idea. I really don’t care what happened to him, it’s the idea that is important.

You wouldn't want me to chap my little pink bottom, would you? I do make a lot, but it sure doesn't seem like it. I pay about 30% in taxes, child support for 3 kids is 40% (and it's not tax-deductible), alimony is another $500 a month. I'd do the math for you, but it would make me cry.

You must be good for the $ 100,000.00, I mean you are the self proclaimed top .17% wealthiest men in the world making $ 175,000.00 a year, yet you whine about doing your duty and taking care of your kids and paying your wife’s alimony of a miniscule $500.00 a month, wow, I mean you must have raised her standards of living so high to pay such an exorbitant amount……… $6,000.00 a year, that’s like a …… vacation or maybe even a car payment. Throwing cash around and bragging up your “worth” makes you sound like a high school kid that’s home for the summer. It’s easy to do on an anonymous bulletin board, but you must be good for it, you’re a .17 percenter, it has to be true, you said so. I have found people that have it don’t talk so much about it, those that had it don’t talk about it because they miss it and those that never had it talk about it because that’s all they think is important and is the only thing they think about and want it soo soo bad. Your true net worth, the only real value you have in this world, the only thing that impresses are those 3 kids, be a great father and raise them well, in 100 years no one cares about how little or much you supposedly made, but your only legacy is your kids, yet you complain about taking care of them.

Why do you want everyone to continue dependency on Oil instead of self generation? Are you a clerk at a gas station? I personally am tired of it. The government doesn’t care about it because they can’t tax it, businesses don’t care about it because they don’t get any residual income, oil companies are in the business of marketing oil, they will gobble up anything and pay off anyone in their way.
Peace,
Dave

This might be a little off topic, but I seen a post on page 1 or 2 not really sure, and I didn't read through all 27ish pages of posts on here.
But I got this in an email and thought I would share......

Those Born 1920-1979

READ TO THE BOTTOM FOR QUOTE OF THE MONTH BY JAY LENO. IF YOU DON'T READ ANYTHING ELSE---VERY WELL STATED

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant..

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medic ine bottles, doors, or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention the risks we took hitch- hiking. As infants &children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts, or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street-lights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes. No video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them... CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good .
While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

The quote of the month is by Jay Leno: 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

Again, I got this in an email, I know it's a little off topic here. But with how everything has changed so much, it seems kinda fitting...
I know I have gotten emails like this before, and ones that differ a little, just thought I would share...

My hubby just bought a 1986 Toyota Tercel from a friend of mine, it didnt run, needed work. We bought it for $400 and put $150 into it. It has more than paid for itself seeing Hubby was driving 30 miles to work every day in his Chevy Silverado. Nice truck, but to fill it up at mid grade cost over $80 every week(would be more now for sure). The car cost about $40 maybe every week or every other.

We are getting free grass hay for our goats from our neighbor down the road, he has only one horse so has lots of extra.

We get lots of eggs, and our other neighbor, grows a huge garden so we usually get some of that. We also share tomatoes and such with all the neighbors too when we got them.

Our fuel was so high this winter, we decided to sell my hubbys motorcycle, (he cannot ride it on the way to work in the dark because of all the deer) so that will go to new siding and windows this summer. We have already put in insulation in the attic a few months ago, has already made a huge difference.

I find myself with the same worries as you have voiced.
How are we suppose to live?
hmm.png

The price of goods is up, the dollar value is down and wages are staying the same.

The bobble heads on TV keep telling everyone to go out and spend money but there is nothing to spend. It cost me 67 bucks to fill my tank yesterday.
rant.gif

A year ago it only took 35 dollars.

My idea is to brace for it.

Start getting storable foods and keep them in a cool, dry place.
Have a water supply and a really good water filter, I have a Berkey and LOVE it. It even filters out food dye.

We started a hobby farm and now have an acre garden and 26 hens and three roosters.
We cut firewood and put back in the wood stove knowing we will not be able to afford the $800.00/month propane bill this coming winter. That is probably a low priced guess.

We are currently saving money for a solar panel.
Next week I am getting the rain barrels and will water my smaller garden with rainwater flowing from our gutters into my barrels.
I try and only drive when necessary. If I need something from the store I will get it before or after work so I don't have to make an extra trip and waste gas because we live 20 miles from town.

Pretty much, it all boils down to change. We need it. It won't get better, it will get much worse before then.
I don't think the change will come with the face of a new President, I think it will come with the determination of Americans as a people to force the change and stand as our Forefathers once did for what we believe is just and right.

Where’s your source? You are on this guy Troy Reed and I am on the idea. I really don’t care what happened to him, it’s the idea that is important.

My goodness. A little historical perspective here:

The quest for a perpetual motion machine has been going on for at least a thousand years, presumably longer. During that time there have been hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands, of perpetual motion machines invented, built, announced, demonstrated, paraded before investors or purchasers, and even patented [since patenting does not require any proof the thing works]). The one you cite is merely a single grain of sand on the Waikiki Beach of perpetual motion machine history
wink.png

Notice that, in all this time, exactly NOBODY AT ALL has yet produced a working model, i.e. that will work for other people and will work when looked closely at (independant documentation of output and duration of performance, getting rid of those pesky secret batteries, etcetera). Everyone who's gotten to the stage of supposedly-working model has either discovered that the "perpetual" motion isn't or (with depressing frequency) has turned out to be a straight-up fraud with a hidden extension cord or whatnot attached.

I suppose one could choose to believe that there is a secret cabal that, through the centuries has with 100% success quashed and covered up every single instance of a genuine perpetual motion machine being invented.

<rolls eyes>

Otherwise, though, it would seem that the likeliest reason for the frequent and totally complete failure of this idea to pan out is that while it is in principle perhaps possible to build something that moves forever, it is NOT possible to build one that does that AND you can siphon extra energy outta. Even under the very best theoretical conditions, there is no evidence that one can have one's cake and eat it too

Y'all are giving me a headache with all this physics stuff.

I don't know if this has been said, but I wanted to add my $.02 I think that all of this talk of self-suffiency and sustainable living is awesome. It's been a "cause" of mine for a long time now. The only thing I hope is, when gas/fuel prices level off and the economy has rebounded, is that everyone doesn't ditch these wonderful self-sufficient ways and go back to a life of extreme over-consumption. We've had times like this before, and for awhile everyone scrambles to hunker down, save money, and provide for themselves and their families....then the cycle repeats itself over and over again. Well, if we keep repeating this cycle where periods of smart living are countered by periods of waste and over-consumption, we're never going to get anywhere. We're never going to learn to be truly self-sufficient and we very well may destroy our planet in the process. I don't have high hopes that this slump is going to bring long-term change to the minds of many, but here's hoping....

My I am cynical today!

Oh well. Can't blame me for trying. I guess if by "perpetual" you mean lasting beyond the end of the world and beyond the end of the universe (since everything in the universe is continually in motion) that you automatically disqualify everything. But ermmm... my math is a little sketchy.

I don't want to sound like we have nothing, but this kinda goes along with my post up one or two......

We work long and hard days. Hubby used to be home only 6 days a month when he was truck driving. And of those 6 days 2 of them (sometimes 3) were spent with the National Guard.
I have been a stay at home mom for almost 7 years (in August will be 7 years).
We have our farm, our animals, and our adventures we can find on our 40 acres. Plus over 500 acres of DNR/Public land right across the road.....
Our kids have a blast out here. Even though they constantly say they are bored.....They always find something to do...
We made a park out in the back, where we have an old camper set up, trails all over the woods for walking adventures or to ride there bikes...

Yes we have a satelite, internet and cell phones. Not a NEED so much as a WANT....
We don't have play stations, or xboxes (or any of the other new games). My kids still play with the exact same atari (sp??) that I played with. Still have the same games.
They don't have dirt bikes, or 4 wheelers, not even a snow mobile....
There bikes come from hand me downs, or auctions I can pick up for $1.
They use there imagination to come up with stuff to do....
Don't get me wrong they aren't deprived of things. They just do with the things we do have....

Over the weekend we had friends out camping in 'our little camp ground' we made. I have known my friend for longer than I can remember, but her kids are some of the most spoiled, selfish, naughty kids I have ever met.....She made many many trips back to there house to get things her kids had forgotten. It's 40 miles one way from her house to mine. I bet she made 5 different trips to go get things the kids forgot. Things they really didn't need out here, like cell phones(which gets NO service out here anyway...to far in the sticks for reception), dvd players, hand held games, more games, scooters, etc. etc....ALL THINGS THEY DIDN'T NEED.....

As her kids are screaming and calling her every name in the book, because they didn't have this or that.
My kids....(who can have naughty moments too), were out having adventures in the woods, finding all kind of things....They even found a baby bird that had fallen out of the nest....
They made there own fun...Because that's what they are used to doing...

We have gas guzziler vehicles. I don't deny that. But we also don't run foolishly (have in the past, but since I have been a stay at home mom a lot of that has changed).
We do have 'responsibility' payments...loans, mortage, utilities, things like that....BUT we also don't use excess money. We don't take a vacation really....We have our own vacations right here....
Now please don't get me wrong....There is nothing wrong with wanting things that I have said.....We just choose do to with out...This isn't because of the prices 'now'....It has more to do with....WE DON'T NEED IT.....

I would love to become more self sufficent. We are to some extent...But then there are other things we Want to Need.......And Need to Want..... Our cell phones are more for emergencys now( cut packages way down....now that hubby isn't driving semi). Our satelite is something we could do without....Except we can't get cable out here, and anntenna's don't work...Yes we could cut the package way down. Internet.....Half the time I don't even like it to begin with....But it's become a Want to Need here...Specially when hubby deploys for the second time....It's one of the only ways I can keep in touch with him when he's gone.....

Sorry if I said anything to upset anyone...That was not my intention....I was more or less just saying my opioion for me and my family....
Thanks for letting me unload for a moment....
