how in the heck are we supposed to live these days

Quote:
Hi from another Northern MI'er! Thankfully I thought ahead to fill up the tank b4 the weekend increase... but I fear they won't lower it.

For me, making bread in the oven doesn't save $$.. we have a gas oven... and the propane cost for this past winter was outrageous. I do have a bread machine and we make a few loaves a week in it. Love it, and especially the smell that fills the house from it! If you're going to purchase one... try looking at Goodwill or any resale shop first..or even yard sales. We don't use ours for sandwich bread too often... as I just purchase it when it's on sale and freeze (or put on porch in winter).

Try doing a search for frugal living and see what sources you can come up with. I know there are forums for it. When I was on bedrest w/ my first son (12 yrs ago) I read "The Tightwad Gazette" there are 3 books, I believe they now sell all as one. There's alot of ways to simplify your life and your expenses in those books.
I'd really like to try the solar oven to bake! That's my new project! Anybody know how hot it needs to be outside temperature... for it to work?

I purchase in bulk and cook in bulk whenever I can (as someone else mentioned) I buy large quantities like restaurants do. w/ a family of 7..and all of our meals all day are at home my kitchen is like a restaurant.

I really try hard to plan out our menus and grocery list to have to run into town only 2 times per month to save on gas, as the stores are not close by. I'm attempting to garden for the first time ever! (I can't keep a house plant alive)

What's killing us right now is the gas, we drive a conversion van... we're down to only that as a vehicle. (dropped down to one vehicle to save $$, the van is paid in full) Our car we got rid of had better gas mileage.. but didn't fit the whole family.. only fit 5 of us. When my husband works he pulls a trailer behind the van.. which he then gets only 7-9 mpg. So gas for our vehicle.. and gas for our heat/cooking/dryer is what's killing us. I do most all of cooking in microwave, toaster oven, crockpot and grill. I'm thinking of purchasing an electric burner to boil water for pasta. Anyone have a cheaper way to boil water for pasta.

It doesn't matter how hot/cold it is outside, as long as the sun is shining, you can cook in a solar oven! It will take longer if it is windy or cold...but the only important thing is that the sun is shining.

You reminded me of an article I just read on MSN Money yesterday about electric cars and all that ...

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SavingandDebt/SaveonaCar/WhatIfGasCost10DollarsAGallon.aspx

What if gas cost $10/gallon? I thought that was very interesting and made some good points. Once everyone turns to electric for this and that, we're gonna have to figure out a way to then start getting more electricity. Since everyone will be draining the electrical grid too.

It depends entirely on your source for electricity. Some electric companies are petroleum based, other coal, nuclear, hydroelectric, etc.

To be more self-sufficient, you're best off finding a way to generate your own electricity via solar, wind, etc.

But yes, the key is that we need to consume less and our entire system isn't really set up for us to do that. This is why I said earlier that it's going to take a multi-dimensional approach to solve our issues. The problem is that we get lazy and make excuses when things relax. All of the things we're discussing now were at issue back in the late 70s when OPEC was tweaking with the system and we had the gas crisis and double digit inflation. Then, a slump came along, prices dropped, and we forgot all about this until now. Even if this improves for the short run, this problem will return again and again. Had we dealt with this 30 years ago, we might be in a better place, but now changes will need to be done at a world-wide level since we have a world economy even more than back in the 70s.

Has anyone heard anything about the U.S. pouring money into oil refineries in India? Just heard from my sister that by 2010 they should be able to supply most of our oil and we can quit buying from the Middle East. Is this just a twisted story or is there any truth to it? I try to keep up on news but this is news to me!

BB - That's a good point. I also heard (I could be wrong) that on some news thing I watched last year I think it was when prices started going up on gas, that we are actually paying cheaper prices then whenever it was 30's. But, I remember hearing that prices were almost double what we are paying.

Oh, here I found something. The price itself was cheap to our standards today, but to what the income was based on back then, it was higher for them to shell out for gas.

I hesitate to place blame solely with OPEC. Yes they produce and sell the crude oil, but it is REFINED by us. Hence I place blame solely on us Americans who have been restricted in refineries and in our ability to drill our own oil.

I agree in conservation measures, but I also believe we need to use our God given resources.

And just a thought....why not eliminate all those "boutique" blends of gasoline each state has?
