My goal here was to have some sex linked chicks... So I crossed my Rhode Island Red Roo over my Barred Rock Hens. They are hatching right now, i expected black babies but They are yellow??

How is this even possible?

I did do some RIR hen x RIR roo and got the expected deep red. But these other chicks (who are supposed to be Black Sex Linked) are yellow!

Any ideas??

Here is the RIR chick for color reference

Same thing happened to me, except opposite! Was trying to make RSLs with my RIR roo and white leghorns... all chicks came out yellow. It was explained to me that it has to do with genetics (obviously), and what quality the original chickens were. I’ll try and find the thread and post it here for you

Jeeze 😲.
I can see that happening with the RSL, but with the barring in the hens, it shouldnt be as bad with the BSL, or atleast I would assume.
Perhaps as they age, the males will show red barring and the females will be solid?? LMAO! I am kinda disappointed!

I hear ya.... I know that it’s different with the barring, it’s just weird that your chicks are coming out exactly like mine. I thought maybe the helpful folks that responded to my thread could respond to yours as well, maybe offer some different insight lol. But I’m right here with ya; advertised them as RSLs and everything. Felt stupid when I had to tell people Never Mind straight run after all....

Did you keep some to grow out and see what they looked like?

Luckly I am not selling mine lol. I might when they get older, honestly I am only interested in the males, the whole reason I wanted Sex links in the firat place

These are the ones that are grown... about 3 months or so? Pics were sent to me by the woman who bought the fertile hatching eggs expecting RSLs... luckily she wasn’t angry and loves her babies regardless....

It's not really possible.
Sometimes stuff like this happens when recessive pop up from both sides like recessive white. That would not be the case here.
It's more complexes because you used two different breeds. Well established breeds.
Also more interesting because the BRa are the hens.
What ever caused it has to be a gene on their side that's hidden
They're not extended black/ extended black as they should be.
How many hatched yellow out of how many?
How many BR hens are involved?
Are they by chance TSC/ Hoover's BRs?
