How is your flock today?

@jwehl I like the water glass option the best because you are not limited to using the whole egg. :)
oh you mean that the eggs are still normal so you could separate the yolk or white and use just that?

I just watching a video on water glassing and it looks awesome. I happen to *have* hydrated lime already.

I also looked at preserving them with mineral oil but I'm not sure which would be better

I don't mind when I have excess egg's. I sell some, feed some back to the flock, and freeze some so that I have some for those slower time later. I boil them, let them cool, then peel and chop, then put them in ziplock baggies for the freezer. Restaurant's do that for those salad bar's. Just thaw the egg's out later. They can be used for potato salad, egg salad, macaroni salad, or even on a good lettuce salad.
That's good info to know.

Yes, I thought that was a pretty awesome and simplistic method to use going into the winter months for when the girls molt and slow down with production.

The one video I watched the lady had eggs that were twelve months old in her bucket of lime and were still good.

I did not see mineral oil being used, but you could try a little of both and see what works out best for you. :) I am guessing the lime method would be cheaper over mineral oil?

Also one of the advantages would be to use duck eggs over chicken because they already have a harder shell and longer shelf life of a normal chicken egg.

how do I turn my chickens into ducks? :p

I am definitely interested in water glassing so thank you for all the info!

@416bigbore I mean they've free ranged forever so they know how to hide. I really do think the only issue was that the one got the bleep beat out of him.
Understandable, Our ducks have eyes on both sides of their head also and very aware of what files over and knows where to hide if need be. I could never understand the term sitting ducks after seeing how alert they all are to their surroundings.

Our chickens are another story, they are not smart enough to come out of the rain because they see the ducks out in it and think they are missing out on some treats ! :gig:lau Silly Turkeys those chickens ! LOL
