How long after treating with Sulmet can the eggs be eatten by humans?

Well, I am still walking and I never stopped eating the eggs. Granted I never gave the birds the full dose, only enough to cure them, gave it for 3 days and assumed that at that point it would give their bodies that boost they needed to help themselves. Everyone is happy and healthy a few months later.
Call you vets office and perhaps they can help you.

Perhaps Amprol or Amprolium? I haven't used it myself but I have seen that it is safe to eat the eggs while layers are on this, and that others have used it to treat minor outbreaks. It is usually used as a preventative though and not a treatment so I haven't tried it, though maybe someone else here knows more and will post.

I have already started them on the Sulmet so I don't think I will switch at this point. To not give them the recommended dose isn't that the same as not finishing the antibiotics that a doctor would give a human (which is a bad thing to do because not finishing the medication can allow the bacteria to mutate)

that is nice, last I looked, I didn't think there was any actual FDA ok coccidiostats for layers- just the prelayers & broilers. I just checked too, and am glad to know there are more options available. Amprolium is readily available at many feed stores under a couple of formulations. easiest to work with is the above mentioned Amprol as the directions & dosing listed are actually for chickens (not like corvid- same stuff, labeled for calves). jess

I'm thinking that there has been no testing on Sulmet and egg layer eggs. Think about how little is published on chickens. We actually find most of the best info here at BYC. What does that tell you?

Wow, this is nearly identical to what I posted the other day on Eprinex/Ivomec. I've given it to the hens as they desperately needed deworming.

It is so frustrating that we can't get a clear answer, aside from Jess, on how to best treat our chickens. I've wanted to use Sulmet, but recall reading the part where you should never eat the eggs again. And that's scary too - what is in these antibiotics and wormers that are so unsafe for humans to consume for an indeterminate time, but that we give to our chickens?

Well it isn't so much that it is definitely unsafe or toxic or something but they've never bothered to test it for egg layers, so nobody will sign off on it as ok for that purpose.
It may be perfectly safe but until enough testing is done the FDA won't give it their 'blessing' so to speak.

I don't know. Humans use sulfa drugs. I can't see that the microdose of sulmet on a chicken would matter that much. I think research on chickens is lacking, and alot of the regs are made for commercial chicken companies, and they sell to the public, and have to use FDA approved stuff.
I know it was the same with ivermectin and birds.
