Hi , I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks and will be gone for 10 days. I have PVC feeders throughout my runs, they will hold more than enough food for them. I also have a PVC watering system that I've temporarily rigged for constant water flow, (just slight stream). So food and water is taken care of, my question is the eggs, my hens are not broody, so will the eggs be good to eat when we got home, as long as they are not sat on ?:idunno:confused::idunno. Thanks

It depends on how warm it will be in the nesting boxes while you are away. Is there a neighbor or friend that could collect the eggs for you while you are gone?? The eggs will pile up, and possibly get broken as well with the hens laying on them for that amount of time.

I would never leave any animal for 10 days without a human checking in. Anything can happen, and someone needs to be able to go over, gather the eggs and check the flock at least every 3 days. A tree could fall, a fire can occur, a predator could discover a way to enter the coop, you just never know. When you think everything is safe, something can happen! I'd get a friend to check or even pay a few dollars to a friend's teenage kid to perform this task for you. Safer for the flock and more restful for you!

My neighbor is going to keep an eye over here, and a friend of mine will be stopping by a couple times. I have a camera in there that I can check with my phone from anywhere in the world. My babies are never alone. I sit in the house and watch chicken tv. LOL.

Can you have someone gather the eggs every day or two?
Do you have a rooster?

Yeah, my friend is going to collect them when she stops by. I just wanted to know if the eggs would be good to eat if they were left in the nest for 7-10 days, and not sat on.

7-10 days is completely dependent on the temperatures where you are ,

For example:If they are on the counter compared to the fridge the shelf life is completely different .

Too many unknowns , let your helpers collect them or you might come home to egg eaters and that is one hard habit to break :)

They might be...if not for the heat, the birds walking on them and possibly breaking them, and the fact that that's not the best place to 'store' eating eggs.

Agreed, myself after that long, I would try hatching. We don't plan on eating them if they are not collected. I was trying to make a long story short and I think I confused everyone, including myself. Long version, we go on vacation in a couple of weeks, we will be gone about 10 days. I do have some one checking in a couple times while we are gone, she will get and keep eggs. We set up the feeders and watering system so that they will be fed and watered just in case something happens and Tina doesn't make it. My neighbor will eyeball the place, but he's older and doesn't get around as well now a days. That's my only neighbor. We were just curious as to if they would be safe to consume or not. I guess my short version turned into a longer version. Sorry. :he. :barnie

You sound well prepared ,
Enjoy your holidays,
And thanks for the long version now I understand where you’re coming from:)
