How long before eggs go bad after being laid?

Recently I have been letting my chickens roam outside their run and into the backyard while I'm at work and today while checking the coop for eggs, I happen to look outside their fenced area and hidden in a grassy area was a nest of eggs, 8 of them. I'm not sure how long they have been there, maybe 2 days or they could have been laid today, but they were cold to the touch. Are they still good or did they go bad? I'd hate for anyone to get sick.

If you're positive they are not more than a couple days old, you could crack one into a bowl and check. Do they look like they were all laid by one hen, or like a lot of hens contributed eggs to this little clandestine nest?

it looked like a team effort.

This is a situation where you do the float test.
Bring the eggs on and run cold water into a large flat bottomed bowl or pan. Put egs in one at a time, the ones that lay flat on ther side are fresh.
If they kind of stand up on one end they are questionable. (MAY BE OK) egg could stil be good only air bubble has expanded.
Of they float to the top, they are rotten. Discard at once.
i would not sell any of these eggs, use them for your own use and break one at a time on a small bowl to check them before cooking or baking.
