How long before they starve and/or die of thirst?

Ha. If you think hens are unappreciative you should have a few Italian Greyhounds about the place. And you cannot eat them and they don't lay eggs.

(For those who do not know an Italian Greyhound is a miniature greyhound. Little, about 10 pounds. And spoiled, generally.)

You're right you can't eat IG's, they would never make good meaties, too skinny, too many bones. But on the other hand, no feathers to pluck. Just teasing, they are sweet, graceful and really need a sweater to make it thru the cool days.

That's all great planning, and believe me, normally I could pull all that off, BUT Anne read your reply, and she told me to tell you that she'd just leave me lying there. My life is one of being forsaken and abused. Some guys are lucky; their wives don't understand them.

i've been begging for snow. we had about a week of it back in December and then some flurries in January, but mostly, it's been raining almost nonstop. my chickies are in a wagon in the middle of the cow field, which has conveniently become a swamp. i'm much happier walking through snow over frozen mud than ending up covered in mud because my boots keep getting sucked off my feet and throwing me into the muck. and all this for chickens who haven't even STARTED laying yet. silly freeloaders.

finally, it snowed last night and it hasn't melted yet! thank god.

I can't BELIEVE I'm the first one to suggest this:
Bring your chickens in the house!
My girls (pullets) have been telling me since we got the first snow that this would be a grand idea.

Then everyone can sleep in and noone gets cold.

Considering the multi layers of clothes I have to put on & take off 3X daily to feed chickens, barncat and the horse this is starting to sound like a good idea to me.

Sure. Good idea! I think you should bring the horse in, too!

You might as well because if you don't you will still have to go outside anyway. Horses produce a great deal of body heat. He will help keep everyone else warm.

No complaints here. Sun (is that what it is called?) came out for an hour yesterday afternoon so we did 20 min of 'chicken TV' and let the girls tell us about their day. We were happy to listen as we later gathered the last two of 21 eggs from our 23 chooks. (We have not told them it is wintertime and that they are not supposed to lay as many eggs)

Today I went out to the coop to find 2 of my fatso barred rocks in the same 12 x 12 nest and another one waiting her turn, with 11 empty nests beside her.

I went back in to get my digital camera and the batteries were dead. Had to settle for a 35mm shot, but was worth it. Time I got back the 3rd fatso had climbed in on top of the other two and was laying an egg on their backs!

That was the pic I got. It was funnier than chicken TV.
