How long can hatching eggs be left alone before dying?

Yup, just because the breed isn't normally broody, doesn't mean you won't get a few oddballs. The interesting thing is, that my Leghorn actually displays broodiness in a manner very similar to a Game bird. When their nest is threatened, they will fly off the nest, cackling very loudly to draw the predator away from the nest. This is what my leghorn did. It made it hard to slip the incubator babies under her, I'll tell you that. I had to put the babies in her nest and remove the false eggs while she was running around like a ninny. I then had to catch her and chuck her in the broody box with the babies. After 30 seconds or so, she made the first broody clucks I ever heard from her. She was a dedicated sitter, but never once did the fluff and growl routine over the eggs. She started doing that when she had the babies though.

Well my leghorn doesn’t do that all she does is puff and scream and then go to the broody clucks in that order but she doesn’t run she stays put. I have seen a broody white leghorn in a video do what you said and run away when approached in the nest.

Has it already gone to the vets? Sorry I hadn’t gotten sooner. My chick laid on her back too I just tried to prop her up and put her their to food and water. It took her time but eventually she got better but I don’t know if there is enough time before you leave. I would cull her if I were you.

I got your message at the vets . Thankyou. The vet said it had a few injuries , cuts and bruises but they’d never seen a neck so deformed/ stretched . I don’t think it would have been able to heal properly so I made the decision to euthanise. Sad . Poor little thing . It was such a pretty one too! Most of the 8 I got are black . There’s 1 yellow and grey doing well they were both larger than rest . Guessing they maybe laken velder crosses with serama crosses! They’ll be funny to watch grow as the eggs were mixed ( mums are pekin, polish,and a laken velder with a serama cross dad! ) Thanks for your reply! Good luck with your hatch too!!

Sorry you had to euthanize her but it was probably for the best. It sounds like you have quite the breeds mixing should be fun to see, you should upload a picture. I really just have the standard breeds the fanciest I have is a Wyandotte and an Ancona.

I don’t know those breeds both look beautiful! What colours? Also got some young Isobel brahmas . Now they’re bigger than all my hens but still young pullets about 12 weeks old! Can’t wait to see them full grown!!

I don’t know those breeds both look beautiful! What colours? Also got some young Isobel brahmas . Now they’re bigger than all my hens but still young pullets about 12 weeks old! Can’t wait to see them full grown!!

The Ancona and Wyandotte are both black and white but the pattern is different also the Ancona is built more like a leghorn and the Wyandotte is built more like a Rhode Island Red. They also have different combs and different coloured eggs. I don’t buy chicks online so it’s almost impossible for me to get a chicken breeds like brahmas it silkies. My local feed store doesn’t sell those type of chickens except for one year where they got all the breeds it seemed like including naked necks, at the time I couldn’t get any because my flock was full.

She’s done it again, today she abandoned her nest twice for a more desirable nest, at first I thought she just got one the wrong nest so I switched her eggs but I didn’t take the infertile eggs when I should have, so she decided to leave the hatching eggs again and went back to sitting on useless eggs. It was so aggravating to see her on the wrong nest again after I had switched them. This time I took all of the eggs that weren’t marked out of all of the nests. The reason I didn’t do this earlier was because I usually had to leave eggs in the other nests or else hens would peck on the broody until she got out of the nest because they somehow knew she had eggs under her.
