How long can I expect my "ladies" to lay eggs?

Someone told my cityslicker husband that they would only lay eggs for less than one year... I know that is not true... but I am not sure how many years it is... I grew up on a horse and goat farm... no chickens..

!!!!! They lay the most their first year, then taper off and stop altogether around 8 years. Some more, some less. I have one that is about 4 years old and I get 4 eggs a week from her.
