how long did it take you, and am i crazy? any input?

fitzy you seem to be a hardworking sensible individual who is thinking of the future. A true good person. You care! But possibly you have too much time to think about things. [Slow season]I'm getting longer in the tooth and have been through more in my life than a peson should have to and one thing has held true. You will survive, things will be alright. If not you die. You sir are a survivor. When it really comes down to it all you need is your brain. Stop and think about what you want to accomplish and set deadlines. And when those deadlines pass don't look upon it as a failure look back and see how far you've come. I continually set goals for myself and often fall short of THE DEADLINE. But I'm very pickey about doing things the right way, no cobble jobs. I've learned that taking shortcuts always cost you more in money and precious time. I'm glad to hear that your ambitous and not a slacker but you have to allow yourself at least a few minutes a day to reflect on your accomplishments. And above all else spend time with your family and your animals because that is what makes a house a home. Give them all attention and love and it will keep you whole. Stop and smell the manure for just a bit until it puts a knowing smile on your face and then you can finish or move on to the next project. I could fill a 40 by 60 pole building with things I could use in the future, just stop over and look in my garage and sheds. I'm close to retirement and one of the things on my list is to sort and organize everything. I'm not even close to what's known as a hoarder. But I do have some GOOD STUFF! I guess what I'm trying to tell you is to not over do the buying. Please take the time to enjoy your short time here on earth.

I actually got paid to take the tiller and a plow and a disk harrow away. I was tending a field when I noticed the stuff. I asked about it and she said she wished I would haul it off and here is an extra $100 to get it done. I watched and watched craigslist for a long time hoping to find one on the cheap.

This is Brutus. He is a good boy. He alerted me to a thief the other morning about 4:30 am (I think that was the time of morning). He was trying to get my riding lawn mower

Relax??? That's boring.
I get bored out of my mind if I don't have a new and exciting project to work on.

Rainy days off work are the WORST because I can't work on my yard projects!!!!

I know I will never be "finished" because I'll keep thinking up new ways to improve things around here!

WOW! mjdtexan you really made a score there. And tala I too am cursed with thinking of new projects, I'm constantly rolling ideas around. Some get trashed and some get put into use. I think that when I stop thinking of projects and following through with them it will be only a short time before my time here is done.

I can SO relate to how you are feeling.

Hubby and I "retired" a little over two years ago to buy our dream farm and live in the country. Took us two years before that to find our 'dream" farm and when we finally found it - it was a hayfield with a bit of woods and an old milking barn on it - no other barns/fences/house.

Being retired, we have more time to work on it than you have, but even so it seems like it has been nonstop building, working and buying farm equipment for the last two years.

this is what it looked like (the main area - not the entire property) when we first saw it - June of 2007

this is what it looked like June 2008 (and it is different now, we have added other things) the concrete building to the furthest right in the pic is the only original building the place had.

and we didn't even move in until August of 2007. we've been busy, to say the least.

this summer we painted the back trailer to match the front one and added lean-tos around the wooden tack barn you see in the pasture on the right of the pic. The stuff that you can't see that we've added are stalls, a lean-to off the back of the green barn a triple chicken coop with runs off two of the coops, a duck/goose pen, etc... etc.... you get the picture

It does feel like home, now, though - just unfinished in places, yet. We just got a farm grant to pay for half our costs on putting fencing up around another 8 acres (to add in more cows.) Yet another huge project that I am not looking forward to starting but will be Oh so happy when it's done. We're doing woven wire.

::: big sigh ::: we keep saying we're gonna take it a little easier this winter, take a day off here and there... but I'll believe it when I see it

I am more busy now than I ever was punching someone's timeclock - however, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

We are still working towards that "self sufficient" lifestyle. We may never fully get there, but we're not doing too badly.

When you have a day job besides the farm, it is gonna take longer, and it'll seem like you're making no progress at all.

I suggest taking pictures - lots of them. (I need an updated shot of the property, myself) - you can then look back at them and actually see the changes that have been made.

You may think it would be cool to snap your fingers and have it all done - but not really - you wouldn't have learned all there is to learn while working out the kinks. By doing it yourself, you are gaining so much more than hiring someone to have it done for you, or by winning the lottery and "poof" instant farm.

Do I look out my window some mornings and whine about having to get up and start in on it all again? yeah - but not very often. Usually I wake up and look out my window and see what my husband and I have built together with our own hands and I feel more Blessed than I have ever felt in my entire life.

be blessed

Mojo Chic'n It looks as if you've come into your own time. You've put your combined noses to the proverbial grindstone and are now able to realize your dream. I applaud your progress! One of my major regrets in life is that me and 4 of my army buddies walked out of a Frank and the Mothers concert in Co. Springs in the mid 70's because they were playing "NEW" stuff. What a bunch of morons! I've come to know that indeed One Size Fits All!!!!!!!!! I'm retiring next June just because of the stupitidy. Now I have Frank, Capt. Beefheart and many other greats running in my head. Thanks!

we fell in love with this property as soon as we saw it.

eta - we have about 25 acres total. maybe 5 of it is wooded, the rest is hayfield or buildings.

interesting note - we have fenced off the front yard, to make it seem seperate from hayfield

and our front yard totals what our entire property was in the city. Hard to imagine our old house, garage, deck and "yard" fit into that little space.
