How long did it take you to build your coop from start to finish?

My coop is 8x12 with 8 foot wall and so far has taken a good 30 hours. We still need to cut out and put in windows and build the run. Our biggest problem has been weather, it's rained every weekend for nearly 2 months! My hubby is also a perfectionist so that adds to the time too.

Here I was thinking we could knock it out in 2 weekends!

Well, if you're like me, everything is done backwards...chickens first then the coop...and then you have to factor in procrastination.

We put in a very ramshackle run with a chickie door through the garage, and an equally ramshackle henhouse inside the garage. I'd say it took us two days, maybe a half day inside and another half outside. I'm talking bare minimum coop.

The most frustrating part was attaching the chicken wire. We are planning to rebuild and this time will use hardware cloth.

The absolute longest part for us every time with every project is deciding on a plan.

Mine was relatively easy because I converted a 8x8 shed. But it was STILL way more work than I anticipated! The run (192 sq.ft) took me 3 days and that was the worst. The welded wire bit me up like crazy! Converting the shed took about 2 days. That consisted of installing windows, 2 roosts, cutting vents and chicken door, lip for the floor, and making the two doors into 4 split doors. I am not a good estimator of time, in respect to projects. I underestimate badly.

Took us about a week, but we lucked out and two walls were already up...we built it in the garage. We insulated the stud walls, then put plywood over it. Framed in the other two sides with 2x4's, plywood on the bottom half, chicken wire on the top. An electric staple gun will be your best friend when doing the chicken wire! Found an old interior door in the rafters of the garage, so in that went too. Painted the walls, put plywood on the floor and we were done! Just bought a 10x10x6 high dog kennel to go outside, and we're going to cut a little door so they can go in and out.

I had my chickens before the coop too...

3peeps we did it backwards too. The 14 chicks I have that are 3 weeks old and have been living in the house since hatching went into the almost finished coop last night. I won't even mention the 2 muscovy ducklings living in a brooder in the dining room.

cluckychick yes we have the same hubby. LOL Mine will redo something a dozen times until it's just perfect... to me it looks the same as the first time he did it. LOL LOL

It took me about 6 weeks doing it myself during snowstorms and rain.
That is my fault for getting the chics before the coop during winter.
They are in their coop for the second day and are very happy, going from a bath tub to a 8x8 coop the same day was exciting for them.

Good luck,
Ed
