Hi. We have a relatively small coop, and a broody hen with 5 2-3 day old chicks. As of yesterday, our broody hen (Bullet, BSL) took them out into the coop for the first time, although not today. We were planning to move them to our garage at night to avoid conflict with the other 3 chickens, and into a separated area of the pen during the day. We were planning to move them tonight, but I think it is too early. When would be a good time to move them?

Can you post pictures of your setup? Is the coop elevated? How much space do you have in the coop and the run?

We have an extremely broody hen and her last clutch, hatched on the 4th of July, were out and about on the 6th of July. Keep in mind, weather factors into the equation. A July clutch with 90 degree outside temps is not the same as an Apri clutch in 50 degree temps. This is what I have experienced.

As far as separation, I never did separation, mama can and does definitely defend them and we haven't lost a chick by leaving them with mom in the community. We also have 15 other chickens she delt with, including our Rooster.
