how long does a hen stay broody?

Thanks all for the replies. It has been 6 FULL WEEKS OF THIS WITH NO LETTING UP IN SIGHT. Tomorrow I am overnighting two female chicks for (day old) for her to sit on. If they do not work out I have someone who will take them. Anyway, next year my DH is building me a separate brooding coop for her or who else ( I have four orpingtons) and let them be mothers. She wins.

After 4 weeks of a broody hen and all attempts to break her.. I finally gave up and asked a friend for a fertile egg.. Good Luck to you.. it can be frustrating.. especially when you are hoping their healthy isn't affected..
