Hi Guys,

Help needed. I was certain that this darling's parentage was Father- Blue Splash Marans and Mother- Pure Crested Cream Legbar. Therefore, I thought is was Sex linked at hatch and chose to keep her as Female. However, from the research I have done, it seems she could not have that parentage and look this way. Therefore, she may not even be a she. Has anyone seen a chick like this before? If she in fact was not sex linked, what would you guess at sex? Thank you so much in advance. ❀️ πŸ’™ πŸ’œ πŸ’–

Very pretty! Age would really help in guessing gender, but she looks like a female to me. She has a crest, so legbar ancestry is probably accurate. Feathered legs certainly could come from marans, though the black feathers say it was not a splash.

Do you own the parents? What breeds are in the flock? That would really help narrow down what the most likely mix is.

Thanks guys, stupid me, I should have given that info. So here goes- This bird is 10 weeks old for definite. She looked Chipmunk when born- Please see pic. I own all possible parents.

Dad has to be- Cluck stock and 2 smoking nuggets- Please see pic, I thought I knew he was a Splash Marans.

Possible mums-

Poppet- Pure Crested Cream Legbar
Bluebell- Blue Marans (Unlikely)
Salty- Pure Light Sussex (Again unlikely)
Ember- Pure Welsummer
Mcguire - Black Copper Marans
Gingernut- unsure see pic, ginger girl but lays bluey green egg.

I couldn't see how it could be anyone else as the pens do not mix.

I have included pics of all possible parents, there are 2 extra ginger girls in there but they are ex battery and don't lay anymore so it's not those girls

She currently has basically zero comb, whereas the leghorn that were born at same time have just started to crow and have clearly been male for weeks. As you can see my birds are stunners 😍

I really appreciate your help.

Thank you in advance ☺️ xxxx.

I don’t know what your rooster’s color genetics are called, but I would venture to say that he’s not a blue splash. Because a splash wouldn’t have black markings. All the markings would be shades of grey with no black. So that’s probably why your β€œpullet” isn’t blue and why it has the markings it does have.

Also, 10 weeks is too young for the male saddle feathers to grow in, so there is still some room for doubt. But that is a sex linked cross. All the males will inherit a gold gene from the mother. Pullets will be silver and cockerels will be silver split to gold. The thing is, sometimes it’s hard to detect the yellowish cast of silver/gold. But if it’s a boy, you will eventually see him be yellowy.

I think it looks like a pullet.

The odd thing is that, when he fertilised 2 of my BCM eggs I got 2 Blue Marans, see pics. He also definitely came out of a Marans egg. So it made sense that he was in fact a Blue Splash Marans. Sorry, this is really confusing for a novice!
