18 weeks old. The pullets are solid black with a top knot. The roos are barred all over black and white. They look similar to a Barred Rock. I'll takes some pictures and post them.

Notice they both have feather legs.

So, these boys have just the single barring gene, since pure barred rock roos are very light-colored with 2 of that gene? Breeding them together (or far safer--on a larger farm--with less related similar birds from other parents?) could result in some roos with the double barring?

Sorry, I'm really not familiar with breeding these types of roosters. I should of said they are more cuckoo feather than Barred Rock.

Since I just ended up with THREE! cockerels (purchased one specifically, got 2 more SR and still not assured I can keep them💔) I've been boning up on breeding ideas, getting sufficient pullets to keep them all happy and reliving decades old HS biology Punnett Squares (including his own beautiful creation, my Crested Cream Legbar hen❤️)

Words like allele, sex-linked genes, recessive & dominant have likely invaded my dreams, but not planning on actually breeding till next spring so I have time to learn better.

Still trying to figure out the cuckoo/barring alleles. It's a tad complicated, but I think it's the same allele??? (Old brain surgery not particularly helpful😖)

*Just looked it up "Genetically they are both barred, with cuckoo birds having the fast feathering gene and barred ones having its slow feathering alternative allele." So I need to study it some more, still.😘

Your experiment is the reverse of what I will try hen vs roo, but same breeds.

I have a 2yo Cream Legbar Hen and I just got a BCM cockerel (+2 others, Alchemist Blue & Alchemist Egger, all 3 from Alchemist Farms near Sebastopol, CA.) Do you know if all Cream Legbar mom hybrid chicks show sex-link characteristics with different breeds? Or just with the BCM? I'm hoping to breed some of my own!
The legbars hen is Barred which why you get a sex link cross. I know she can be paired with a splash rooster and you would get blue sex links but I think you can use other colors bases for the roo too- just can't remember what other colors can be used in a barred sex link cross

I believe a Cream Legbar hen only guarantees a single barred allele (which 100% of her offspring would get), but then if the roo also had even a single barring allele, that guaranteed sex-linkage would 50/50 disappear? But any roo sire with even a single barred allele should always appear cuckoo at minimum??? Phenotypes (appearance) & genotypes (paired and/or influenced alleles) don't always match.

I guess I will have to separate her from her new cuckoo boyfriend if I hope for sex-linkage! And one Youtuber reported his fail at not enclosing a pair for a full month before collecting eggs. (Poor Melody, she does especially love her freedom.😓)
