I've never had roosters and hens, so this may be a stupid question. But I'm wondering how long a rooster needs to take to actually fertilize the eggs because we've watched our 19 week old Foghorn mount his pullet, Snow White, and then dismount in what seemed like a very short time. There's no chatter or squawking going on - just on and off. So I was wondering if that was it and he was done or if this action is just the preliminary stuff leading up to a longer act later?

I would say 10 seconds would be a marathon for my rooster

My hens will not squat for him yet.

He tries to woo them, but they run. Hopefully they will squat for him and not just me soon. I think his ego is bruised

There will be a white bulls eye in the middle of the egg. There was a picture on here somewhere of what it looks like,I`ll see if I can find it.In the search box at the top of the page typein what does a fertilzed egg look like and you will see some pictures.

Blink and you'll miss it. Each mating is short, but then they do it a lot.
