How long eggs last in refrigerator

A chick is born with a certain amount of ova (say 1000). She will only lay up to that many eggs in her lifetime, never more but she could lay less. They are predetermined at birth. I add an hour of light in the morning before the sun comes up for heat in the coop before they come out.

Yes, it was Mother Earth News that did a great egg-storage experiment. I believe that the last results posted on their site (it has been a while) claimed that the home-raised eggs (unwashed and in a standard egg carton) stored in the frig lasted for at least seven months with almost no change in quality. Store bought eggs were not as good, washed home-raised eggs didn't fair as well either. They also tried some other storage methods that didn't fair well at all! The article is well worth searching for on their site. I read it a couple of months ago, so my memory may be a bit skewed!

They did lay last winter, but they were just old enough and it was their first time. Guess I just assumed that they would not this time. Who knows? Maybe they will again.

I still would like to know how long they last though, so I will look up that article and link it here for others if I find it.

In theory they are sterile when laid. Thus they will just dry out providing there are no cracks in the shell to get infected though. Probably could eat a sterile one a year later, just be a small rubber bouncy ball inside. Not that I would though. A few months in the fridge are fine so far away from home, since I stock up before leaving so I don't have to buy eggs.

Guess thats your choice and I can understand it but if I'm sinking feed and time into them I want SOME eggs in return.....
Your not going to wear them out.

LOL Thats a good way to put it...

Way Cool. Thanks, Mortimer, I got distracted with work, lol.

This article answers my very question.

Thanks so much,
Ellie
