How long for rooster's crow to mature?

Tighten the tie wrap to point where you can slip your index finger between the birds neck and the tie wrap. Tie wrap should not be loose enough to slide up and down with your finger in place.

No the rooster did not try to scratch the wire tie off, it's not that tight. He still tries to crow, maybe not as much. When he extends his neck to crow his neck expands to the point where it fills the ring around his neck and stifles the crow.

From the point they first starting crowing in earnest, it normally takes 2-4 weeks for him to work out the kinks and sound like a rooster should sound. Then there are those that never really crow "great."

The Silkies seem to have a very quiet crow - kind of pathetic sounding. The modern game however... Wow! And such a little guy.

That's a good tip, Joe - I'll try it when I need to! My EE roo is 5 months old and I've only heard 2 horrible sounds from him. It was embarrassing -

How old are they when you can tell by looking at them that you have a rooster? or is it just when they crow you know for sure?

When our rooster starting crowing it was hilarious...we got quite a few laughs at his attempts but I remember it took several weeks for him to perfect his crow. We were worried about our neighbors being annoyed too because we live in town but after speaking to them everyone enjoyed hearing him crow (he was eaten by a raccoon this spring

). Our neighbors actually enjoy having chickens in the neighborhood and they're more than happy to buy eggs.

I think I may have to try this tip,my 8 month old blue orpington." Chester" must crow 100 times by noon.Thought he might mellow out but he seems to just love the sound of himself.Thank god we live in the country!He is a great rooster otherwise, huge& protective of the girls.May slip one on tonight
