How long from internal pip to external pip and then hatch? UPDATED

I have an internal pip on a pilgrim egg, on day 29 1/2 (if I'm counting right, they were set on 04/12 in the morning).

How long should it take to pip externally, and then how long until hatch.

C'mon, little guy, please make it!

My gooseys all fully hatched within 24 hours of pipping internally.
They were externally pipped about 5-6 hours after internal pips.

Hi

I usually find external pipping follows 12-24 hours after internal pipping. Then a further 24-36 hours to hatching. However its very hard to be so prescriptive and one can only generalise. All eggs are individual. Some pip relatively late around day 30 and then make rapid progression others take longer. However its a critical time of physiological changes but you're well on the way if your gosling is now internally pipped and breathing.

Mine have also been about 24 hours from internal to external pip then another 24 hours to hatch. But they can take up to 3 days after internal pip before hatching.

I had an external pip last night around 6:00 when I looked.

It was enlarged this morning, and a closer examination revealed that the bird has zipped about 20% of the way around the shell.

I hope that by the time I get home from work tonight (about 6:00 PM local time), I might have a gosling.

I have less hope for the two other eggs of that set that survived all of their various traumas (filthy when shipped, very poorly wrapped, dumped into a box with inadequate packaging).

One had a little movement last night, but hadn't yet internally pipped. The other hasn't changed at all in about 2-3 days.

But, even 1 success would be good, IMHO.

If I get one, I'll post photos. I'm hoping for a boy (although I'd like at least one of each eventually).

I've got 4 more in the other incubator, which were set 8 days after this batch. They are at that "hard to tell what's going on in there stage) but I see movement in them at this point. So, we'll see.

One final note -- the one that is zipping had a "detached air cell." The excellent posts on incubation and detached air cells weren't on here yet when I set them, so now in the future I know to do things a little differently. But, what I think is ironic is that the one I thought LEAST likely to hatch of the ones that developed is so far the only one that is trying to hatch. The one I thought looked best all along is the one that appears to have stopped developing a few days back.

We'll see what happens -- I've been wrong before. This egg game is full of surprises at every turn.

Check your other to see if their aircells are drawing down and if there are any shadows in the aircell to confirm internal pipping.

BTW, thank you for all of that work on the posts -- those are so helpful in general, for any species. I can't believe how much work you put into them, they are a perfect reference. The moderators should "sticky" them to the top of the forum and keep them there.

I've found if you talk to an internally pipped chick they will talk back and try harder. My sebastopol internal pipped at 27.5 days and external pipped by the next morning (Saturday am). He didn't hatch till around 5pm Sunday but I kept a very close eye to be sure he was chirping and trying and not getting week. Another set of sebs took the full 30 days. When I set eggs, 24 hours later = day 1. Good luck!

I try to set eggs so they hatch on the weekend but that's never really reliable, is it??

gotta go to work to afford scratch feed and cracked corn for the Canada visitors.
