I'm on my second year.

My five free-ranging chicks were 34 weeks old yesterday - having survived dog attacks, hawk attacks and the neighborhood fox. And they never did learn to roost in the henhouse at night - they prefer to sleep in a pile in a corner of the run (which is a totally protected, enclosed part of the coop). Maybe cold weather will make them change their minds.

I have been a chicken lover since I was a kid...

Now, my seven year old son has joined me in the feathered adventure.

He got his first chicks as a birthday present this year. We ordered 12 Campine Pattern Old English Bantams...we got 9 hens and 3 roosters....2 roosters went to a petting zoo, Snoopy stayed with his favorite girl and are currently living a great life on the "farm" I grew up on.

The other 7 girls, (we lost one to a mysterious illness), live in our backyard. They are our favorite friends and the ones we look forward to seeing in the morning. I bake them a loaf of bread every few days and they are currently enjoying what was left of our Halloween pumpkins

About 2 months ago, Jaxon got his first clutch of fertile eggs and an incubator. 3 of the 5 Japanese quail hatched. Since then, he has hatched 1 Bantam chick from Snoopy and Lola, 3 Buffies, 4 Rockies and 4 Black Aussies (this is what he calls them)

We are spending the winter setting up a "system". He would like to show and sell his birds.

We figured this was a great place for him to come find information (Mom's suggestions aren't always good enough since I am just MOM)

I am sure he will post a million pictures of his girls.

Thanks for being here...
If I can be of any assistance, let me know...if you are not one of my kids, you might just find me knowledgeable

Mom to:
1 husband, 4 kids, 3 cats, 1 German Shepherd, 1 parakeet, 8 Bantam hens and a rotten rooster, 3 Japanese Quail, 1 button quail named Cutie (RIP) and some fluffy chicks

I think it is very interesting to learn that many of the members have been involved with chickens for under 6 months. I have been at this my whole life...18 years. I am a fourth generation chicken-lover: beginning with my great-grandmother and passing down to my grandmother, my aunt, and then myself.

But I must say, welcome all new chicken enthusiasts! I hope you will continue your love for them!

9 years, but had to cull all what I had 2 weeks ago, and was chickenless a few days, then had some chicks hatch to start over.
