How long have you had chickens?

Was raised around chickens,...but for myself as a chicken keeper,..I have been at it for three years now.

Now I have "Chicken Fever".

I currently have 34,* I think* with 25 chicks on the way in a few weeks,..OH! AND 12 Serama eggs in the incubator,...

I have had my flock for 2 1/2 years. BUT I also just graduated from college 3 1/2 years ago, so I really got them as soon as my life settled down. Before that, my family had chickens from about 1996 to 2005 ish.
(my dad's rescue dogs ate the last 3 chickens and it upset my dad so he never did get more)

I grew up with them and about the first thing I did when I got married (37+ years ago) was start my own laying flock.....I'm 58 so that's about how long I've had chickens.

I'm going on 7 months and never would have thought I'd be so fascinated with these birds! From their quirky personalities to their hilarious antics to the egg song- I DEFINITELY understand the chicken obsession!

My love of chickens started at a young age. One of my fondest memories as a child was going to work with my mom ( she worked at a plant nursery that kept a small flock of chickens for pest control) and visiting Gretchen, whom I've since learned was a barred rock. My mother would spend her 8 hours working her butt off, and I'd spend mine with Gretchen. Sooooooo, when I finally got old enough to leave the nest and buy my first house, we knew we NEEDED ( or at least i knew, the Dh was a little slower- but he finally wised up) some pretty chickies to roam our yard. We've had our small ( and sometimes not so small) flock for about 3 years now..........and I think I would probably get rid of my husband before I would get rid of those rotten little birds

One day 4 years ago I walked into the farm store......the rest is history! Started out with 6 barred rocks, which I still have because I consider them my pets and now have 48!!!

3 weeks . Hubby bought me 3 chicks at the local feed store.. He was raised on farm and his mom always had chickens. and uncle raised them and sold the eggs.. I wanted chickens 4 years ago.. hubby said they'd tear up his grass. LOL he let me get ducks May 2009..
He told me on the way home from feed store he'd like to have some chicken eggs every so often even though he likes the duck eggs too.

Said he'd also given up on having grass in certain parts of the back yard.. Because of oak trees it's getting too shady.

This evening he was playing video games and looked down and the 3 chicks were on their perch watching the video game!!!! LOL..

I have them in a large guinea pig pen right now.. We finished their night pen today.. they will go in it during the day until they are bigger. and in hubbys play room for now at night.

I don't know which one of us is doting on them more. LOL..
