My Barred Rock Hen laid her first egg off the roost on Sunday July 29 which cracked when it fell. I then found a very soft shelled egg under the roost on Monday morning but I have not seen anything since.

It is coming up on two weeks since she laid her first egg. She seems to be acting normal. It does appear that she may not be eating as much but I do not have time to watch her all day to really see how much she is eating. Should I be getting concerned about her being egg bound? Or just give her some more time?

Thanks in advance,

Yes, I live in North Georgia. Been fairly warm here but not extremely hot. High 80s to low 90s.

Do you have nesting boxes? if you do, put golf balls in. My chickens weren't laying, and then i put golf balls in, and one started laying that next day. I don't know if i was just lucky, or what, but i do know chickens like to lay where other eggs are. Maybe she just needs some encouraging?

Sorry then, that's all i got.

That is weird; maybe that 'first egg' was just a fluke. Or maybe she has a hidden nest somewhere? Do your chickens free-range? In my experiance it's usually shorter than that: my leghorn layed her first egg, skipped a day, and then started laying again.
