I have a feather legged rooster that ive been keeping apart from the flock because the other chickens had his legs picked clean. . . i desided to put him back with the flock today (he has good feather regrowth and was walking better but still limps), i stayed out with him til everyone had settled down and getting along when one chicken pecked at his leg and pulled a shaft but left the quick intact. I cleaned and dressed the area and separted him from the flock again. How long will it take for quick to dry out? I know that the longer he is away from the flock the harder it will be to put him back without issue.

I'd keep him out until he was completely healed...them picking at him will only make it take longer.

This is just one more reason to avoid too many different types of chickens in your backyard flock. Not that chickens are racists or any thing like that but because chickens are too curious about flock mates who are vastly different. Then before long curiosity goes one step further and morphs into a blood feud.

That didnt even cross my mind but it does make sence. Its the roosters that i have that pull my feather legged roos leg feathers out. Im already planing on separating the roos i plan to butcher from the rest of my flock. I have a feather legged hen as well but she gets left alone and has all her leg feathers. Thank you for the imput I'll keep it in mind when i purchase chickens in the future.
