My poor RIR has been on the nest today for 3 hours. She is trying to pass an egg for the second time. She laid an egg two days ago, but that took 5 1/2 hours from start to finish. The poor girl. I wish I could make this a little easier on her.

How long does it normally take for the girls to lay an egg?

I got my second egg after 3 hours.

. It's a little bigger then the first.

Our RIR is on the nest right now, and circling around trying to pass the egg. It looks uncomfortable, and reminds me of childbirth a little. *gulp* I'm am timing her, so as a pullet 'newbie' too, I'll let you all know and we can compare times.

MY BO is trying to lay an egg for the past 2+ hours - all I hear is her scratching around, trying to make a comfortable "nest" - She first started laying her egg about 5 days ago. I feel so bad knowing that it takes her at least 2.5 hours or even more to pass an egg. Yesterday, she laid an egg with no shell. I do too, wonder if the 2+ hours mark is a normal laying time?

Some girls like to go into the nesting box and take their sweet time--kinda like how some guys spend an hour reading the paper in their "office" LOL As long as she isn't distressed or visibly straining I wouldn't worry

My SS is quick and takes her 45 minutes to lay. My RIR takes an hour and my EE is still at two-three hours.

Mine usually take twenty to thirty minutes, they are pretty fast. Only when the weather is particularly hot do they take their time about it: just like everyone feels more lazy when it's hot!
