How long to go with the red 250 watt brooder light?

Quote:
Please be sure that you have secured the heat lamp in two ways. For example, we hung ours from a chain and then used zip ties.
Also, pay attention to the dust build up on the lamp.
Coop fires do happen.
Good luck to you!

I wondered about this also and when my meat babies were 3 days old I realized I had to get a different set-up instead of having them in my house(11 cornish x chix) so put them in their permanent set-up(3'w x8' long inside area-not allowed access to run yet!)with the red brooder light and they got to choose their heat level. surprised they were further away from light than I thought would be comfy for them but their almost 2 wks old now and fat/sassy.

Gritsar,

Thanks, I just went out and secured lamp a 2nd way, with zip ties. The chicks (16) seem to being doing fine, they are spread out across about 2/3 rds of the coop. Some resting , some eating, some walking around.

So far so good. Lets hope Poppa can sleep tonight with them in coop for 1st night.

I agree with the other posts. I have a coop for my chicks. From day one they are in their coop. I put their brooder in the coop too. I leave the brooder door open so they can explore the coop. They usually spend the first few days mostly in the brooder.

I'm in MI too

I put mine in their coop at 3 weeks they are almost 6 weeks now. I leave one 100 w red light on all the time and at night I turn on a second one. I also have a shop light in there for during the day.

Let us know how your night went.

They did just fine. Temps got to around 41 degrees here last night. I looked in at 7:00 this morning and they were slightly huddled under the 250 watter. But soon moved around and took feed when I put new out. I checked on them a half dozen or more times today and all are moving all around coop.

They seem to be more feathered out around tails today! ( May just be my imagination)
Also they looked huge in brooder and were always trying to fly , when I was changing food and water out. Now they look small again and have not tried to get up and roost yet, but may be too young yet. Thanks gritsar and Shaggy'sGirl for asking! How are both of your flock's doing?? SG were in Michigan are You? I am in Clare in center of the state.

THis site is awsome! People are friendly and helpful!

Hey from Traverse City fellow Michiganders!

We're looking at starting to build this weekend for my soon to be 4 new chicks. I have not made the big decision yet on whether or not to order given the timing and winter being on it's way.

A lot of the info in this thread has helped though. Very nice!
