When mine ices over, if it’s thin enough for me to break, I just break it up, and they still get in.
My farm pond froze and thawed several times last year. Sometimes 6” thick! The ducks did fairly well at keeping a small area open, but we had to use a propane torch to melt spots sometimes. They sleep on the pond, even when 98% of it is frozen solid. I’ve never had an issue with frostbite with my ducks.
