How long to lay consistently?

2 of my girls are laying consistently, but they are a Golden Sex Link, and a White Leghorn. The Maran....

Well, in a month, she's given me 8 eggs. She'll sit on the nest for an hour and not lay. She'll sing the egg song, and not lay. She'll lay one egg, and not again for 3 days, or 4, or 5.

I know Marans aren't prolific layers, but oughtn't her first year to be her best? And she just started.

I've got several young hens doing this.

The first egg,

The rest of the week,

Finally,

Then,

I guess that's why some breeds were developed specifically for eggs, and others weren't. My 'weren't's are really trying my patience.

She WANTS to lay an egg. She goes and sits on the nest for an hour. She gets up, having laid no egg.

If she was not a pet...she would be dinner.

I could do it. My kids wouldn't tolerate that.
