How long to leave unhatched egg with hen?

Chick is dead. Before I even got to water candling it, it seems that mum hen had given up on it, and was spending most of her time off the nest. I'm not game to open it up and see whats inside... I'm a bit squeamish

I don't blame you. I think it might put me off eggs for awhile, to open up something like that. I think I'd embrace the mystery.


I guess no matter what, don't open it in the kitchen.
